When to visit Socotra
Socotra has two seasons that matter to travellers, and the choice between them shapes everything about an expedition.
October to April — the main season
This is the window most of our expeditions operate within. The Khareef (southwest monsoon) has ended; the seas are calmer; the lagoons and beaches are fully accessible. Temperatures on the coast sit between 25°C and 33°C depending on the month. October and November bring occasional residual swell; December through March is the most stable period.
Best months: January and February — stable weather, calm seas, cooler highlands.
June to September — the Khareef
The southwest monsoon brings strong winds and rough seas. Some beaches become inaccessible. The landscape turns unexpectedly green — one of Socotra's least-photographed faces. Hardy travellers who come in this period find an island they have largely to themselves, at the cost of some comfort and many of the coastal experiences.
Best months: July (peak Khareef character, if that is what you are seeking).
What determines the 'right' window for you
- Swimming: October–April for the lagoons; all year for highland wadis
- Dragon's blood trees: photogenic year-round; softer light in winter
- Dune walking: best October–March before the heat
- Budget: peak season (Jan–Feb) books earliest; shoulder months offer more availability
Our team is glad to advise on the specific tradeoffs for your group and preferred dates.
